Greetings from Rotterdam, Jeffrey de Bruin

What you need to know

The first thing you need to know is: You don't need any drawing experience! I draw Rotterdam is suitable for every drawing level. I will help you. I will give advice and show easy and somewhat more difficult options.

What we will do

We walk approximately 2.5 kilometers in the center of Rotterdam. We pass several beautiful places to draw your own personal large "Greetings from Rotterdam postcard". Discover the city in a different way. Not just wandering around, but stopping to draw what you see. A relaxed experience in a lively city.

We start with a Polaroid of yours and place it in the middle of a sheet of A4 size paper. Around the Polaroid we draw typical Rotterdam items such as: the Markthal, cube houses, Laurenskerk, statue of Marten Toonder, bicycles and decorative elements from the city and nature. We draw in a simple and fast way. I give advice for "Handlettering" (writing in a nice way).

Ultimately you have your own handmade "Greetings from Rotterdam postcard". You can take a photo and post it on social media, you can sent it to friends or family or bring it back home as a reminder of your afternoon drawing in Rotterdam.

Where the experience takes place

We visit beautiful well-known (and less well-known) locations in the center of Rotterdam. There is space to sit down and there are interesting subjects to draw. Most places have sun (if there is!) and shade.

Starting point I draw Rotterdam

  • We start at the Stayokay Rotterdam at Overblaak 85-87. This Stayokay is located in one of the supercubes of the Blaakse Bos. You can wait inside the lobby.
  • The starting point is close to Blaak station and also close to parking garage "Kiphof".
  • You can safely leave your bicycle in the free bicycle parking at the station.

"Let's go and sketch in the city for an afternoon!" Normally this wouldn't occur to me at all. But what a relief .. I was completely relaxed.. really. I can't actually draw at all, but with the simple pointers you get ... you can do more than you think. The result is something to be proud of. Highly recommended!" – Sandy Pelealu

“What an original way to look at a number of well-known buildings in Rotterdam! Not by snapping a quick photo and walking by, but by watching and drawing intently. With Jeffrey's excellent explanations and the clear examples he gives, everyone can make a very nice memento of a day in Rotterdam. The polaroid and hand lettering complete the "postcard". I highly recommend this tour.” – Anke van Doorne

"Very nice outing to do! It was fun to see in a different way and interact with some Rotterdam highlights on Blaak! The walk was accompanied by interesting background stories and tasty cookies/biscuits/cakes and is definitely worth it! I hope that there will be more editions in other parts of the city with different drawing challenges, because then I will gladly join again!" – Joris Wenting

Do you prefer to draw windmills? I also give a drawing tour in Schiedam. This typical old Dutch town, with the highest classical windmills in the world, is less than 15 minutes away from Rotterdam.
